LOTF Thesis Post

"Roger gathered a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space around Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law." (Page 62)        Throughout the book, the boys gradually lose their sense for civilization and order due to human nature. This scene was the initial scene of violence towards the littluns. At this point in the book, civilization still dominates but it's on the decline. The boys are loosing their grounds for being civilized people, but Roger still feels restricted by common societal figures such as grown-ups and policemen and the law. The results of chaos affect the changes of the island in Lord of the Flies.

Thanksgiving Break

I started my Thanksgiving Break off relaxing and catching up on rest. I hung out with my friends and cousins. Then, on Thanksgiving Day we went to my great aunt's house with my entire mom's side of the family. All of my cousins were there, including 2nd and 3rd cousins so it was really fun hanging out with everyone. That night we had my dad's side over for dinner. Everyone was stuffed from lunch, so we just had gumbo.       I ended the break in Woodville, Mississippi. My cousin was the first to shoot a deer. Everyone helped him find it because it didn't die right away. Then, my uncle and dad cleaned it. It was kind of gross and sad to see the dead deer, but it was super exciting for my cousin. Overall, this Thanksgiving Break was eventful and relaxing.

Symbolism

It was a freezing winter night and Taylor had no where to go. He was in a part of town which he had never seen before. This was odd because he had a pretty good familiarity with the town having been living on the streets for the past 2 weeks. There were no cars, street signs, or stores in sight. Something deep down in Taylor knew this night was going to be different. He waited and waited for a car or even to see a phone booth. But, there was no hope....until a gust of wind zipped by him from a passing car. Taylor started chasing the car in hopes of it stopping. Thankfully, the car saw Taylor out of the rearview mirror, and backed up to him.       In the car was a man and a woman. They rolled down the window and asked, "What are you doing out here on a freezing night like this?" Taylor responded shivering, "I have been on the streets for 2 weeks and got stuck out here. I am lost and hungry and thirsty." The couple immediately filled with sadness said, "Ju

LOTF Response

"The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. Piggy, saying nothing, with no time for even a grunt, traveled through the air sideways from the rock, turning over as he went. The rock bounded twice and was lost in the forest. Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across the square red rock in the sea." (Page 181)         This passage is important to the Lord of the Flies because it expresses how the boys and the organization have changed on the island. The conch symbolizes leadership and order. It was used to call meetings and allow everyone a chance to speak their own thoughts and ideas. Piggy and Ralph really valued it because they thought having order and structure among everyone would help them have a chance to be rescued. With the conch being broken, it shows that now there is no more order left on the island.         The tone of this passage is very unemotional. This is the scen

conspicuous: obvious to the eye or mind          blistering: hot enough to raise blisters        The weather the past week has made me ready for fall and winter. With these seasons come Thanksgiving and Christmas, my two favorite holidays. Normally, Baton Rouge has blistering   heat on these days, but I hope this year thats not the case.        Last year, waking up on Christmas Day I expected to put on coats and warm clothes, but stepping outside I quickly figured out that would be unnecessary. It ended up being 90 degrees. Although, thats normally very usual because it rarely gets under 40 degrees, it is conspicuous that that might happen again this year.

LOTF Reading Response

Lord of the Flies is a story about leadership, perseverance, and independence. These three topics are evident throughout the book and come up in direct and indirect ways. Normally the reader has to dig deep to find out what something really means because its not just flat out stated in the book. Everything from the beast to the conch has a deeper meaning or symbolism. These symbols contribute to the main topics.       The characters have to express the qualities because they are all on an island alone with weird things happening. For example, Piggy was very scared at the beginning but as the book has progressed he has grown to adapt to the island. Many of the characters had a fear of independence, especially the little kids, but quickly grew out of it. They realized that they had to be leaders to be able to cope. Overall, leadership, perseverance, and indepence are the main focus in Lord of the flies.
