LOTF Response

"The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. Piggy, saying nothing, with no time for even a grunt, traveled through the air sideways from the rock, turning over as he went. The rock bounded twice and was lost in the forest. Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across the square red rock in the sea." (Page 181)

        This passage is important to the Lord of the Flies because it expresses how the boys and the organization have changed on the island. The conch symbolizes leadership and order. It was used to call meetings and allow everyone a chance to speak their own thoughts and ideas. Piggy and Ralph really valued it because they thought having order and structure among everyone would help them have a chance to be rescued. With the conch being broken, it shows that now there is no more order left on the island.
        The tone of this passage is very unemotional. This is the scene where Piggy dies and all the other characters act like it is not a big deal. Piggy has been alive the entire book until this one short paragraph that shows no care or compassion. This really signifies how the island is in complete chaos and there is no civilization left. The hunters are in complete control and do not care about the death of a person. Overall, the death of Piggy symbolizes that the island is in complete chaos with no organization left.

Kayaking

        This summer when I was at camp in Washington I went kayaking in the San Juan Islands. On the last day, there was a huge channel we had to cross. It was 6 miles long. On the channel, there were ferries, boats, and sailboats all crossing. Also, it was the most popular time of year for boats. To top it off, it was about to rain so the currents were even stronger. Aside from the currents and traffic, the water was crystal blue and the wind was blowing off the chilly water so the weather was perfect.        My group and I started on shore on the other side of our destination. We took a long break and then decided to cross the channel. The kayaking guides instructed us where to point our kayaks to break the currents. Once we started the adrenaline kicked in and we started to paddle through. At points, it felt as if we were getting pulled backwards but we kept having to paddle strongly. Fall Break Free Post

       Fall break is definitely one of my favorite breaks. It is a great break from school to relax and have fun. This past break, my mom and one of my friends mom surprised us with a trip to New York for our birthdays. We were both super excited and could not wait until we got there.        We had to get up at 3:30 Thursday morning to get to New Orleans to catch our flight. After the short plane ride, we did not waste any time, we jumped right in to doing things. We shopped the first day and went out to dinner for an early birthday dinner at the Sugar Factory. The next few days, we spent in Central Park, Little Italy, Brooklyn, and SoHo. Also, we went to see Hamilton. It was awesome! Overall, I had a very fun fall break and got a good break from studying and homework.

Symbolism

      It was a freezing winter night and Taylor had no where to go. He was in a part of town which he had never seen before. This was odd because he had a pretty good familiarity with the town having been living on the streets for the past 2 weeks. There were no cars, street signs, or stores in sight. Something deep down in Taylor knew this night was going to be different. He waited and waited for a car or even to see a phone booth. But, there was no hope....until a gust of wind zipped by him from a passing car. Taylor started chasing the car in hopes of it stopping. Thankfully, the car saw Taylor out of the rearview mirror, and backed up to him.       In the car was a man and a woman. They rolled down the window and asked, "What are you doing out here on a freezing night like this?" Taylor responded shivering, "I have been on the streets for 2 weeks and got stuck out here.
