Lord of the Flies is a story about leadership, perseverance, and independence. These three topics are evident throughout the book and come up in direct and indirect ways. Normally the reader has to dig deep to find out what something really means because its not just flat out stated in the book. Everything from the beast to the conch has a deeper meaning or symbolism. These symbols contribute to the main topics.
The characters have to express the qualities because they are all on an island alone with weird things happening. For example, Piggy was very scared at the beginning but as the book has progressed he has grown to adapt to the island. Many of the characters had a fear of independence, especially the little kids, but quickly grew out of it. They realized that they had to be leaders to be able to cope.
